Job summary

Irving ISD is seeking a dedicated Special Education Aide to assist the classroom teacher in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities. You will help implement programs, support self-help, behavior management, and instructional activities under supervision.

You will supervise students inside and outside the classroom, assist with daily routines, safety, and record keeping. Strong communication and ability to follow directions are essential.

Qualifications

• Must have Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate or equivalent.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to work well with children with disabilities and follow verbal/written instructions.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.”

Responsibilities

• Maintain confidentiality and protect student privacy.
• Keep accurate records of students with disabilities and share with appropriate personnel.
• Supervise students throughout the day (lunchroom, bus, playground, community).
• Assist teacher/diagnostician with confidential folders and materials.
• Help students with activities (transfers, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs).
• Assist in managing behavior and crisis situations as needed.
• Adapt to each student’s medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and safety needs.
• Prepare materials for individuals or small groups under teacher direction.
• Inform teacher of any special needs or problems of students.
• Perform other duties to support safety and instructional needs.

Major Performance Responsibilities And Duties

• Maintain confidentiality
• Keep accurate records of students with disabilities and furnish to appropriate personnel in a timely manner
• Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus duty, playground, and community
• Assist teacher and/or diagnostician in maintaining, copying, transferring confidential folders as required
• Assist special needs students with individual tasks as may be required including, but not limited to, transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene
• Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention
• Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and safety needs through in-service and/or teacher direction
• Work with and/or prepare materials for individual students or small groups to develop skills through instructional activities under teacher direction
• Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students
• Perform other duties that enhance the safety, security, and instructional needs of the campus as requested
• Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and legal/local board policies
• Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned

Safety

Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
