Job summary

Virginia Beach City Public Schools seeks a part-time paraprofessional to assist classroom teachers and students with disabilities, helping meet instructional goals and support independent learning.

The position covers up to 29 hours per week as a temporary contract through June 11, 2027, with a pay rate of $16.40 per hour. Responsibilities include behavioral support, personal care tasks, mobility assistance, and maintaining student records under teacher supervision.

Qualifications

• General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the teaching of special education population.
• Ability to maintain files and information.
• Skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment.
• Ability to operate audio visual, standard office, word and data processing equipment.
• Ability to operate adaptive equipment.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and administrators.

Responsibilities

• Assist teacher with duties and specialized tasks to support instructional and behavioral goals.
• Work with individuals or groups as assigned by the teacher.
• Assist with behavior modification as directed by the teacher.
• Lift, move, and operate adaptive equipment.
• Help students with personal care tasks (lavatory, hygiene, diapering, toileting, wash-up).
• Escort students as assigned.
• Support students with mobility needs (transfers, wheelchairs, bus loading/unloading).
• Monitor students to maintain a safe learning environment.
• Provide programmed practice activities as developed by teacher/therapist.
• Report concerns to the teacher promptly and assist with resolution.
• Assist with breakfast, lunch, snack, including clean-up.
• Maintain records and files.
• Perform related work as required.
