Job summary

The Merrillville Community School Corporation is seeking a paraeducator to assist the classroom teacher in achieving learning objectives by working with individual students or small groups. Reports to the Teacher of Record, Principal, and Director of Special Education.

Requires 2 years of college, an associate degree, or passing the ParaPro Assessment; 48 college credits; experience in Special Education preferred.

Qualifications

• Two years of college experience, or an associate degree, or
• Pass the ParaPro Assessment
• Completed 48 credit hours of college-level classes
• Experience in Special Education instruction preferred

Responsibilities

• Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning.
• Assists teachers in devising strategies based on students' needs and abilities.
• Guides independent study, enrichment, and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
• Supervises students during drills, assemblies, and field trips.
• Provides accommodations for students based on IEPs and monitors progress.
• Communicates with the general education teacher about individual students.
• Maintains confidentiality and ethical behavior expected of educators.
• Performs other duties as requested by the Teacher of Record.

• Passed the ParaPro Assessment
• Completed 48 credit hours of college level classes
• Experience with Special Education Instruction, preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
• Assists teachers in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
• Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
• Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies and field trips.
• Provides assistance and monitors progress of students receiving services.
• Provides accommodations for students based on their IEPs.
• Communicates with the general education teacher on any issues or special information about an individual student.
• Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
• Perform other duties as requested by the Teacher of Record.
