Job summary

Saginaw Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Paraprofessional (Classroom/One-on-one) to support students in a special education setting under the supervision of a teacher.

The paraprofessional will assist in supervision and instruction, support health/hygiene needs, and help implement IEP objectives in a dynamic urban classroom environment.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • 60 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university (or) pass the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment Test with a score of 460 or higher.
  • Previous experience working with special education students is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments and materials under teacher supervision.
  • Support instructional activities with students under teacher direction.
  • Assist with health/hygiene needs and personal care per care plans and school policies.
  • Collaborate with teacher in evaluating progress, coordinating tests and homework, and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Assist in implementing behavioral plans indicated by the IEP.
  • Instruct students one-on-one or in small groups to meet remediation goals.
  • Monitor student activities and behavior.
  • Monitor students during lunch, recess, field trips to ensure safety and learning.
  • Perform record keeping and clerical functions as needed.
  • Assist in feeding assigned students as needed.
  • Report observations related to student behavior.
  • Respond to emergencies to resolve safety concerns.
  • Assist other staff to maintain an effective learning environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Type: Student Support Services/ Special Education Aide

Saginaw Public Schools Special Education Teacher Paraprofessionals must have the ability to accept supervision and direction, also the ability to work creatively and skillfully with students. The paraprofessional must have the physical stamina for lifting and movement of an ambulatory student. The Paraprofessional should exhibit emotional stability and good judgement in making decisions. Paraprofessionals are responsible for assisting in the supervision and instruction of a special education classroom and/or special education student(s), under the supervision of a teacher.

Physical Demands

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the supervision of the teacher
  • Support instructional activities with students under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • Provide appropriate health/hygiene related by assisting students with personal care needs, including toileting, diaper changing, changing clothing, and providing catheter-related assistance in accordance with established care plans, school policies, and applicable health and safety procedures.
  • Confer with the teacher, as requested, in evaluating student(s) progress, coordinating tests and homework assignments, and/or implementing IEP objectives
  • Assist in implementing behavioral plans indicated by the IEP
  • Instruct special education student(s) one-on-one or in small groups to assist the teacher in implementing goals for remediation of student deficiencies and ensuring student success.
  • Monitor student's activities and behavior.
  • Monitor special education student(s) during lunch, recess, field trips or as designated by the teacher to ensure a safe and positive learning environment
  • Perform record keeping and clerical functions as needed
  • Assist in the feeding of assigned student(s) as needed
  • Report observations and incidents relating to specific students concerning unacceptable behavior
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns
  • Assist other staff as required to ensure an efficient and effective learning environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • A minimum of 60 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university (or) pass the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment Test with a score of 460 or higher.
  • Previous experience working with special education students is preferred
