Qualifications

Summary

The Special Education Paraeducator is responsible for supporting students with disabilities in grades Kindergarten through Grade 4 by assisting with academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional instruction under the direction of certified special education teachers and related service providers. The paraeducator helps implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), fosters student independence, and promotes a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.

Principal Accountabilities:
  • Support individual students and small groups in implementing instructional activities aligned with students' IEP goals.
  • Reinforce academic, communication, social, behavioral, and functional skills under the direction of certified staff.
  • Assist students in accessing the general education curriculum using accommodations and modifications.
  • Implement behavior support plans and utilize positive behavior intervention strategies.
  • Collect observational and academic data to assist teachers in monitoring student progress toward IEP goals.
  • Assist with classroom organization, preparation of instructional materials, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology.
  • Provide supervision during classroom activities, transitions, lunch, recess, field trips, and other school activities as assigned.
  • Support students with organization, self-regulation, independence, and daily routines.
  • Assist students with personal care needs, including toileting, feeding, mobility, and hygiene when required by student needs.
  • Collaborate with special education teachers, classroom teachers, therapists, nurses, and administrators to support student success.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student records and information in accordance with FERPA and district policies.
  • Maintain cooperative and respectful working relationships with students, families, and school personnel.
  • Demonstrate professional work habits including punctuality, attendance, meeting deadlines, and participation in required meetings and professional learning.
  • Model professionalism, ethical conduct, patience, flexibility, and respect in all interactions.
Certification, Knowledge and Skills:
  • Associate’s degree plus 1-3 years of experience in education, child care or a related field. Candidates with an Associate’s degree in Education or Early Childhood Education preferred.
  • Experience supporting students with autism, developmental disabilities, emotional or behavioral needs, or multiple disabilities is desirable.
  • Ability to implement teacher-directed instructional strategies and behavior intervention plans.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students while promoting independence.
  • Physical ability to assist students with mobility, positioning, lifting (when appropriate), and personal care responsibilities as assigned.
  • Willingness to receive ongoing training in special education practices, behavior management, de-escalation techniques, and district initiatives.
  • Understand that all work responsibilities are subject to performance goals established by the district.
