While working in a classroom, under the supervision of a teacher/administrator, assists in the direct delivery of instruction in a classroom setting with pupils with special needs based on their IEP. The primary objective of such assistance is to affect learning for mastery by implementing both developmental and remedial methods in basic skill areas and content areas. The employee assists certificated staff by: implementing lesson plans (activities which include reviewing and correcting the work of pupils), participating in parent conferences, proctoring examinations, keeping relevant records, operating instructional equipment in appropriate instructional settings, as well as performing related duties as required.

Some positions may require conversational and written skills in a specific language(s) other than English related to the needs of the assignment. An ability to translate and adapt materials to and from English into that language(s) may also be required.

Some positions may require that the employee furnish a certificate of clearance from the Department of Motor Vehicles in order to meet District insurability.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under direction of the Director of Operations and Special Projects, the employee provide supervision during the bus ride for pupils with severely impairing conditions before and after school between San Francisco and various Non-Public School (NPS) sites. They will be transported to a midday assignment in an SFUSD public school for a minimum of 2 hours daily. Responsibilities include implementing portions of the IEP (including behavior support plan and goals) and may include heavy lifting. The position requires close attention to student and their surroundings. The position is for a minimum of 7 hours per day, 5 days per week.

Employee will be required to furnish proof of the following:

• Commitment to successfully complete the American Red Cross Standard First Aid and American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation trainings within 90 days, if the candidate is not already in possession of valid certificates
• Commitment to partake in and successfully complete all of the components of the district- approved verbal and physical de-escalation training

Essential Duties

The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.

As the Special Education Paraeducator, you will:

• Supervise students receiving Special Education services during bus commute to and from NPS school site.
• Assist in planning lessons and preparing instructional materials for severely impaired pupils
• Working in accordance with an individualized education program (IEP), supervises and/or tutors individuals or small groups of pupils in specific skill and/or content areas. Support planned lessons with assigned groups in the classroom or other assigned educational location
• Assist in explanation of subject matter. Administer tests and examinations, review, correct and re-view assignments, and maintain individual pupil profiles. Assist in evaluating pupils
• Prepare and maintains records and lists not required by law to be so maintained by certificated personnel.
• Prepare, operate, and maintain instructional equipment and supplies such as audio-visual equipment, computers, laboratory equipment, and other teaching machines. May also procure and store such equipment. Issues various supplies and equipment to pupils, and maintains necessary records pertaining to instructional equipment and supplies.
• Assist in maintaining classroom discipline in order to provide a positive learning environment. Enforces classroom and school rules. Assists in behavior management and discipline among pupils on field trips and at school site activities.
• May assist other designated school staff in monitoring halls, locker areas, cafeteria, yard, auditorium, gymnasium, lavatories, and other areas of the site in accordance with program regulations.
• Render first aid in compliance with modern precautionary methods. Reports disciplinary problems and injury incidents to the proper supervisor.
• May assist the professional staff in publicizing educational development programs by issuing information, objectives, and functions of the program.
• Assist with pupils’ personal needs such as lifting, toileting, feeding, diapering and positioning if required.
• Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

In addition to the knowledge, abilities, and skills of the S10 All Impairments, the S10B NPS Bus Special Education paraeducator will have the knowledge, ability, and skills that include familiarity with teaching methods, instructional media, test scoring, school organization, and school rules and regulations. Demonstrates competency in performing the following tasks: working with pupils with special needs based on their IEP, acting quickly and effectively in emergencies, working with and relating to all individuals within the culturally diverse environment of SFUSD, and developing and maintaining effective, courteous communications with pupils, staff and public.
