Job summary

IRVING INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT is seeking a Special Education Aide to assist the special education teacher in a functional environment. The role supports students with disabilities, handles personal care needs, behavior management, and instructional tasks under a certified teacher's direction.

The position is nonexempt, with pay grade 035 (187 days), reporting to the Principal at an assigned campus, and requires Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate and a high school diploma or GED.

Qualifications

• Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain confidentiality.
• Keep accurate records of students with disabilities and furnish to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
• Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus duty, playground, and community.
• Assist teacher in maintaining, copying, transferring confidential folders as required.
• Assist special needs students with individual tasks including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene.
• Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention.
• Learn and adapt to each student’s medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and safety needs under direction.
• Work with materials for individual students or small groups to develop skills under teacher direction.
• Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.
• Uphold school rules, policies, and regulations.
• Participate in staff development, meetings, and events as assigned.

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Assist the special education teacher to provide for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, personal care needs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Minimum Education/Certification

Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate

High School Diploma or GED

• Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and legal/local board policies
• Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned

Working Conditions

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem-solving skill while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. May be required to lift or transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities. Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Possible exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Occasional irregular hours.

Safety

Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
