Job Description

Performance Responsibilities
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times.
  • Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established district curriculum goals, and establish and communicate clear objectives to the students for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location and the needs of the students.
  • Strive to implement the district’s philosophy of education, instructional goals, and performance expectations.
  • Assess student accomplishments regularly, provide progress reports as required, and communicate with parents as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Diagnose learning challenges regularly and seek assistance from district specialists as needed.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Follow the SPS code of conduct and develop classroom behavior rules that are enforced fairly.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals, and make written evaluations as required.
  • Maintain professional growth and satisfy district requirements.
  • Take an active part in the contractually approved teacher evaluation process.
  • Attend building and district meetings to promote communication and decision‑making among staff.
  • Participate in traditional school‑sponsored activities as agreed upon by the building administrator.
  • Contribute to district and building decisions regarding budget, facilities, curriculum, and staff well‑being.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
Qualifications
  • Highly qualified with required competency in the content area.
  • Appropriate content and grade‑level licensure: Teacher of Severe or Moderate Disability (PreK‑8) from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Bachelor’s degree with appropriate license; or a Master’s degree with appropriate content‑area license at the high‑school level (preferred and expected within 5 years).
