Job summary

Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 is seeking a Special Education Bus Attendant to support the driver with loading/unloading students, operating the lift, and securing wheelchairs and seats. You will help manage passengers, respond to ill students, and stay aligned with district policies.

The role requires clear communication, reading/writing skills, and the ability to train for special-education aide tasks.

Qualifications

• Clear verbal communication skills, including two-way radio use.
• Reading and writing skills to understand student needs.
• Ability to complete special-education aide training and in-service meetings.
• Ability to cope with illness/injury of a passenger.
• Ability to work efficiently under pressure and in stressful conditions.

Responsibilities

• Reports on time and is on the bus when scheduled.
• Assists the Bus Driver in loading and unloading passengers.
• Operates the lift to board/discharge special needs passengers.
• Secures wheelchairs, harnesses, seatbelts, car seats and booster seats.
• Assists in passenger management.
• Assists passengers who become ill on the vehicle.
• Be aware of any special needs of students on the bus.
• Available to the driver and follows instructions.
• Communicate by two-way radio when problems arise and driver is unavailable.
• Read and follow procedures in the Employee Handbook.
• Meet dress standards as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
• Communicate professionally with school personnel, students and the public.
• Prepared mentally and physically for safety-sensitive duties daily.
• Physically capable to load/unload passengers.
• Maintain a helpful, positive attitude toward coworkers, staff and the public.
