Job summary

Sylvania is seeking an Educational Assistant – Special Education to support daily instructional activities and student care under the supervision of the Building Principal. The role focuses on assisting with small-group instruction, behavior management, and personal care tasks to foster a safe, inclusive learning environment.

You will work closely with teachers to maintain engagement, prepare classroom displays, and help with daily operations while ensuring student safety and well-being.

Qualifications

• High school diploma.
• Valid New Mexico Educational Assistant License.
• Ability to pass employment verification.
• Experience working with exceptional populations or special education students (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Assist with small-group instruction and tutoring at the teacher’s request.
• Support students in completing classroom tasks and activities.
• Use appropriate instructional techniques, strategies, and materials.
• Maintain student engagement in assigned learning activities.
• Communicate accurate and current information to students in ways that support learning.
• Assist the teacher in maintaining classroom discipline and routine.
• Follow prescribed behavioral management programs.
• Assist with classroom organization and daily operations.
• Assemble and maintain bulletin boards and classroom displays.
• Sanitize classroom areas and equipment using approved cleaning materials.
• Assist students with personal hygiene, toileting, tooth brushing, hand washing, and feeding skills.
• Assist with lifting and transferring students and with physical therapy functions as directed.
• Escort students to and from various school locations as needed.
• Supervise students on school grounds and during field trips and school activities.
• Report suspected child abuse or neglect.
• Complete assigned supervisory duties (hall, bus, playground).
• Cooperate with administration, parents, teachers, and coworkers.
• Demonstrate positive public relations and communication skills.
• Use conflict resolution strategies and manage time effectively.
