Job summary

Port Huron Area School District Port Huron Northern High School - Fort Gratiot Township, Michigan is seeking a Special Ed / Medical Paraeducator to support instructional programs. This role requires confidentiality, strong communication with teachers, and the ability to assist students with medical needs.

Starting immediately, 6.75 hours per day, 191 days; multiple qualification paths are accepted, including MTTC or Parapro options; CPI trained or willing to be trained is required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain confidentiality regarding the student and materials used in this program.
• Understand characteristics of physically disabled students and promote positive self-esteem.
• Participate in in-service training to support students.
• Communicate medical needs of students with the teacher and maintain home-school communication.
• Assist and/or lift children according to individual student needs and ensure safety.

QUALIFICATIONS

As partners in the instructional process, paraeducatorss who work in programs supported by Title I/31a funds must meetoneof the following requirements:

• High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
• Specialized behavior training
• Coursework in behavior or social work preferred
• CPI trained
• Associate’s Degreeor60 semester hours at an institution of higher education,orMeet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of a formal state or local academic assessment approved by the State Board of Education.
• a. Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Professional Readiness Exam (MTTC) or the original Basic Skills Test (MTTC)
• or
• b. A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the
• mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam or
• c. ETS Parapro Assessment – A passing score of 460 is required.
• 6. Title I or Skipped Title I Schools require #1,2,3 or 5above achieved prior to being hired or applicant will be hired as a substitute until achieved.
• 7. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Trained or willing to be trained.
• 8. Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, squat and lift up to 50 pounds in assisting students, if needed.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintain confidentiality regarding the student, information, and materials used in this program.
• Ability to understand the characteristics of physically disabled students.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the affective domain and the ability to promote positive self-esteem.
• Participate in in-service training programs that will enhance the ability to support students.
• Ability to communicate the medical needs of each student with the teacher and maintain the flow of communication between the home and school.
• Be familiar with basic first aid procedures and the process to use with students who may have medical needs.
• Perform any other related duties or tasks necessary to the success of the student while at school.
• Clean and prevent student accidents due to illness or physical impairments.
• Assist and/or lift children according to individual student needs.
• Perform other related duties or tasks necessary to insure the success of students and the program.
• Conducts him/herself in a professional manner commensurate with his/her position and project a good public image of the School District in dealing with the community and employee groups.
