Job summary

Oakland Schools is seeking a dedicated paraeducator to support special education students in the Apollo Early Childhood Center. You will reinforce classroom instruction and assist with personal care needs under the direction of licensed staff.

Requirements include a high school diploma and the ability to work with students with diverse disabilities. Training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention is provided, and you may assist with Medicaid billing as part of the role.

Qualifications

• Must be able to work with students with physical, cognitive, emotional, learning and/or developmental disabilities.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with school staff and administrators.
• Must be willing to be trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Techniques.
• Must be willing to assist with personal care needs as listed in student IEPs.

Responsibilities

• Complement, supplement and reinforce student instruction under teacher supervision.
• Document personal care needs for each caseload student daily.
• Assist with Medicaid billing as needed.
• Support general supervision during lunch, recess and transitions.
• Attend to a student whose needs include routine medical procedure or assistance with hygiene as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the special education teacher or principal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Must have ability to work with students with physical, cognitive, emotional, learning and/or developmental disabilities
2. Previous experience working with this age special education student is preferred
3. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with various school officials, principals, teachers and office personnel
4. Must possess initiative to accept and carry out varied assignments along with a consistent, systematic approach to the tasks performed
5. Must be willing to be trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Techniques
6. Must be willing to use Nonviolent Crisis Intervention skills to physically manage students who are physically escalated as directed by the teacher/administrator
7. Other duties assigned by the special education teacher or the building principal

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Complement, supplement and reinforce student's instruction under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher in the general education environment
2. Must document personal care needs for each caseload student daily
3. Must sign Consent to Bill for Medicaid and complete Medicaid billing monthly
4. Assist with the preparation of material; clean up after students, etc.
5. Assist with the general supervision of the students including lunchtime, recess time, etc.
6. On an as needed basis para-professional employees may be required to attend to a student whose needs include routine medical procedure or assistance with regular hygiene
7. Other duties as assigned by the special education teacher or the building principal

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School diploma and/or related experience.

LANGUAGE, MATHEMATICAL AND REASONING SKILLS

Ability to speak and write effectively. Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral format and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
