Job description

Introduction

The Maryland Office of the State Prosecutor is seeking multiple applicants to serve as Assistant State Prosecutors cross-designated to work full-time as Special Assistant United States Attorneys (SAUSAs) in the Office of the United States Attorney (USAO) for the District of Maryland, in either the USAO Baltimore or Greenbelt Office. The SAUSAs will work closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and task forces to identify, investigate, and prosecute individuals and organizations responsible for committing gun, gang, and narcotics crimes, and acts of violence, throughout the State of Maryland. The positions are contractual and funded through the Governor's Office of Crime Prevention and Policy. This is a Special Appointment position and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

POSITION DUTIES

This position will be expected to oversee the investigation and conduct the prosecution of a variety of firearms, narcotics, and violent crimes in federal court. SAUSAs will be expected to participate in both the investigation and prosecution (including extensive grand jury, pretrial, and trial practice) of a variety of firearms, narcotics, and violent crimes in federal court, including, but not limited to:

  1. racketeering and gang-related offenses,
  2. use of firearms in furtherance of violent and drug trafficking crimes,
  3. illegal firearms possession and firearms trafficking offenses, and
  4. acts of violence including robberies and homicides.

In addition, the attorneys will work closely with the USAO’s designated Project Safe Neighborhoods Coordinator and working groups to serve as a legal advisor as cases are identified for prosecution in federal and/or state jurisdictions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have a J.D. degree, be admitted to the Maryland bar, and have at least one full year of litigation experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates with a background in criminal investigations and prosecutions. Strong abilities to build and maintain relationships with victims, witnesses, and law enforcement are essential, along with excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
