Job summary

State of California is seeking a Special Agent Trainee in the Department of Justice to join the Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse. You will assist with complex fraud investigations and provider enforcement, focusing on elder care facilities, with training under a Special Agent Supervisor.

The role requires knowledge of relevant California codes, strong writing skills, and willingness to travel across the state; odd hours may be necessary as cases develop.

Qualifications

Job description

The mission of the Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse (DMFEA) as the State’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (“Unit”) is to investigate and prosecute, both criminally and civilly, (a) health care providers who defraud the Medi‑Cal program and (b) those who abuse or neglect elders and dependent adults in care facilities.

Under the close direction of a Special Agent Supervisor, the Special Agent Trainee receives comprehensive, on-the-job training in the application of the principles and techniques of Medi‑Cal fraud investigation and enforcement activities, upon successful completion of Peace Officer Basic Training Academy. As part of a team, the Special Agent Trainee assists with complex criminal investigations and investigates allegations of Medi‑Cal provider fraud and allegations of patient abuse and neglect in care facilities. May be required to conduct collateral duties as necessary. In accordance with Penal Code Section 13651, duties shall be conducted with an emphasis on community interaction and collaborative problem solving.

Experience conducting complex fraud, tax or health/quality of care investigations, violent crimes against persons, investigations of crime scenes, insurance fraud and drug interdiction. Applicants should have excellent writing skills; experience in preparing and serving search warrants; knowledge of the California Penal Code, Welfare and Institutions Code, Health and Safety Code, and Insurance Code. Must be able to exercise good judgment, be willing to work odd and unusual hours and travel throughout the State of California. The most competitive applicants will possess a POST Basic Certificate or POST SIBC Certificate.
