Job summary

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department is seeking qualified Sergeants and Lieutenants for consideration as SPEAR Team Supervisor (Specialized Police Engagement and Response Team). This role provides direct supervision to SPEAR Team members and leads planning, scheduling, and execution of advanced tactical training programs.

Qualifications

• Must be a Sergeant or Lieutenant at time of interview.
• Must have 5+ years of law enforcement experience.
• Current MTAPD supervisor in good standing.
• Knowledge of MTAPD SOPs, GOs, firearms and use-of-force policies.
• Knowledge of NYS DCJS instructor standards and training regulations.
• Knowledge of Patrol Rifle Operators Course and Active Shooter Training.
• Experience in lesson plan development and instructor evaluation.
• Proficiency in reporting and documentation.
• Ability to conduct risk-based, scenario-driven training with safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct supervision and mentorship to SPEAR Team Officers.
• Oversee development and delivery of Patrol Rifle Operators Course and Active Shooter Training.
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate training programs, ranges, and instructors.
• Enforce range safety and serve as safety authority during live-fire evolutions.
• Review and maintain lesson plans, training records, and instructional materials.
• Evaluate instructor performance and student outcomes and report results.
• Manage equipment procurement and maintenance for tactical training.
• Represent the Professional Development Section at interagency training events.
• Coordinate with SOD unit commanders to align training with operational needs.
• Attend and complete specialized training courses as directed.
• Work extended tours as needed to support training objectives.

Education

NYS DCJS Instructor Certification (preferred)
