Job summary

Amentum is seeking a Flammability & Nonmetallic Materials Engineer to join the Aerodyne Industries team. The role focuses on selecting textiles and polymers, conducting flammability testing in high-oxygen environments, and coordinating across NASA centers and partner agencies.

You will provide technical leadership on nonmetallic and fibrous materials, support NASA Materials and Processes engineers, and coordinate tests in accordance with NASA standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2–5 years of experience in the field or related area.
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Fire Science and Engineering, or related field with at least 2 years direct experience; textiles preferred.
  • Familiar with high performance polymers used in film, foam, or fiber forms (e.g., PTFE, PVDF, Aramids, Polyimide, PEEK, PBI).
  • Familiarity with flammability, fire, flame, or combustion testing on polymers.
  • Experience with characterization methods such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM/EDS; knowledge of polymer testing standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with team and cross-functional groups.
  • Problem solver, quick learner, able to manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including presenting findings.

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects on textile materials selection and flammability testing in high oxygen atmospheres and related campaigns across NASA centers and partners.
  • Advise on nonmetallic and fibrous materials for soft goods and polymers exposed to extreme environments.
  • Provide technical leadership on material selection for Government Furnished Equipment in NASA programs.
  • Support NASA Materials and Processes engineers with material evaluation and selection.
  • Coordinate flammability, ignition and combustion tests per NASA-STD-6001 with White Sands Test Facility.
  • Develop flammability coupons from various soft goods and polymers.
  • Review NASA reports, proposals, and publications related to nonmetallics and fibrous materials.
  • Perform testing and characterization on nonmetallic materials as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
