Job summary

Lunar Outpost seeks a Mission System Cybersecurity Engineer to advance security, resilience, and compliance across mission and ground systems. You will shape security architecture, manage risk, and drive implementation of controls in a fast-paced startup environment.

The role integrates cybersecurity into system design, development, and operations, with a focus on NIST 800-53, ITAR, and contract obligations, ensuring audit readiness and continuous improvement across the program.

Qualifications

• Must hold a degree in engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, IT or related field with relevant experience.
• Experience with security compliance audits and frameworks.
• Strong system engineering experience (requirements, architecture, design, V&V) for cyber-systems.
• Knowledge of NIST, RMF, ISO standards and mission assurance concepts.
• Ability to influence engineering teams and work cross-functionally.

Responsibilities

• Stand up and maintain security controls aligned to NIST 800-171, DFARS, NIST 800-53 and ITAR requirements.
• Decompose cybersecurity requirements into architecture, design, implementation, and verification activities.
• Design, implement, monitor, and maintain security controls in mission systems including IAM and incident response.
• Lead or assist security compliance audits and ensure timely remediation of findings.
• Manage documentation including SSPs, POA&Ms, SCTMs and authorization evidence.
• Lead or contribute to incident response, forensics, monitoring, and remediation of cyber incidents.
• Support security awareness and training programs across the organization.
• Evaluate tools for log monitoring (SIEM), DLP, and secure configurations.
• Plan resilience, survivability, and upgradability of mission systems against evolving threats.
• Collaborate with IT and other compliance teams within a GRC framework.
