Job summary

AeroVironment, Inc. in Albuquerque, NM is seeking a skilled FPGA Engineer to join our Space Tech division.

You will develop and maintain RTL firmware for mission-critical aerospace systems, focusing on SoC/FPGA implementations and peripheral interfaces, while aligning with high-reliability requirements. Responsibilities include deploying firmware to physical devices, optimizing for radiation-hardened environments, and ensuring compliance with NASA/ESA/MIL-STD standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science.
  • 2 years of professional experience designing using hardware description languages (VHDL or Verilog).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance.
  • Experience with Xilinx devices and toolchains (Vivado/ISE) and/or Microchip devices and toolchains (Libero).
  • Firmware development in embedded aerospace or space applications is preferred.
  • Knowledge of serial communication protocols and standards.
  • Familiarity with clock-domain techniques, debuggers, FPGA floor planning, TCL, and co-design.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain general-purpose and mission-specific RTL/Firmware.
  • Develop and maintain firmware for peripheral interfaces and ADC/DACs.
  • Implement serial links and interfaces (SpaceWire, SPI, CameraLink, 1Gb+ Ethernet, MIL-STD).
  • Create and maintain automated FPGA firmware build scripts.
  • Deploy firmware to physical devices and space-grade hardware.
  • Architect and develop firmware for space electronics including RTOS-based systems.
  • Optimize embedded software for radiation-hardened, high-reliability environments.
  • Conduct system integration, testing, and validation in simulated and real aerospace conditions.
  • Support compliance with NASA, ESA, MIL-STD etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.
