Position: Sous Chef

Code: BF1031

Summary:

The Sous Chef assists with overseeing a kitchen with complex operations and manages the kitchen’s food and production processes. This position participates in food preparation, seasoning, cooking, supervises kitchen staff, and performs other responsibilities as directed by management. This is an exempt position, typically reporting to the Restaurant Chef, depending on local requirements.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assists in supervising daily kitchen staff activities, assigns responsibilities, and sets deadlines for timely completion of tasks.
  2. Promotes safety and sanitation, inspects food handling, establishes safe practices, and follows HACCP procedures.
  3. Assists with menu planning, inventory management, and supplies.
  4. Maintains effective cost control, service, and quality standards to maximize sales and profits.
  5. Ensures compliance with company, franchise, and regulatory standards, and that all products are prepared and presented according to brand or company standards.
  6. Serves as a resource for resolving complex problems and issues.
  7. Provides recommendations regarding hiring, firing, and staff promotions or changes.
  8. Maintains effective communication and positive relations with staff, including performance reviews, discipline, and development programs.
  9. Delivers high-quality customer service, ensures staff training, and supports customer satisfaction and product quality.

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment:

  1. High School diploma or GED required; post-secondary culinary training preferred; brand certification a plus.
  2. 3 to 5 years of experience in kitchen operations and staff supervision.
  3. Certification in Serve Safe Management required.
  4. Demonstrates team management, delegation, issue resolution, coaching skills, and motivational abilities.
  5. Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  6. Ability to speak, read, and understand instructions, policies, and communicate effectively with individuals.
