Position: Sous Chef

Summary:

The Sous Chef assists with overseeing a kitchen with complex operations and manages the kitchen’s food and production processes. This position involves food preparation, seasoning, cooking, supervising kitchen staff, and other responsibilities as directed by management. It is an exempt position, typically reporting to the Restaurant Chef, depending on local requirements.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist in supervising daily kitchen activities, assign responsibilities, and set deadlines for timely completion
  2. Promote safety and sanitation, inspect food handling, establish safe practices, and follow HACCP procedures
  3. Assist with menu planning, inventory management, and supplies
  4. Maintain cost control, service, and quality standards to maximize sales and profits
  5. Ensure compliance with company, franchise, and regulatory standards, and that all products are prepared and presented per brand or company standards
  6. Serve as a resource for resolving complex problems and issues
  7. Provide recommendations for hiring, firing, promotions, and other staff status changes
  8. Maintain effective communication and positive relations with staff, including performance reviews, discipline, and development programs
  9. Provide high-quality customer service, ensuring staff training and support for customer satisfaction and product quality

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment:

  1. High School diploma or GED; post-secondary culinary training preferred; brand certification a plus
  2. 3 to 5 years of experience in kitchen operations and staff supervision
  3. Serve Safe Management certification required
  4. Team management, delegation, issue resolution, coaching, and motivation skills
  5. Strong organization and multi-tasking abilities
  6. Ability to speak, read, and comprehend instructions, policies, and communicate effectively
