Job summary

Montage Palmetto Bluff seeks a Sommelier to lead beverage service, guide wine selections, and train staff to deliver exceptional guest experiences. You will mentor teammates, manage cellar standards, and collaborate on cost control while ensuring memorable moments for guests in a luxury hotel setting.

The role emphasizes wine knowledge, guest service, and ongoing education, with opportunities for growth within Montage Palmetto Bluff’s fine dining and events programs.

Qualifications

• One year minimum of experience in food and beverage operations.
• The Guild of Sommeliers certificate is a plus.
• Luxury hotel experience is preferred.
• Strong guest service and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist in administering beverage sales in outlets, lounge, and banquets.
• Guide guests through the wine list with detailed descriptions and recommendations.
• Engage guests with wine discussions and anecdotes about featured wines.
• Educate associates about wine regions, varietals, flavors, and pairings.
• Conduct associate training on wine service standards, decanting, pouring and presentation.
• Mentor and support team members to grow wine knowledge and service skills.
• Maintain wine cellar with proper temperature, humidity, and storage.
• Perform regular inventory audits and manage cellar rotation to minimize waste.
• Collaborate with restaurant management on beverage costs and pricing.
• Maintain wine and cocktail lists with bartenders and beverage managers.
• Attend daily pre-shift meetings.
• Deliver on guests’ expectations and create WOW moments.
• Perform additional duties as required by business needs.

Your Journey

• Assist in administering the sale of beverages in outlet, lounge, and banquet functions, as well as teaching and mentoring bartenders, servers, and other associates involved in the sale of alcoholic beverages
• Guide guests through the wine list, offering detailed descriptions and recommendations based on their preferences and menu selections.
• Engage guests in discussions about wine, answering questions, sharing insights, and providing memorable anecdotes or stories about featured wines.
• Educate associates about wine regions, grape varietals, flavor profiles, and food pairings through training sessions, tastings, and educational materials.
• Conduct associate training on wine service standards, including proper decanting, pouring, and presentation techniques.
• Provide ongoing mentorship and support to develop the wine knowledge and service skills of team members.
• Maintain the wine cellar in optimal condition, ensuring proper temperature, humidity, and storage conditions to preserve wine quality.
• Conduct regular inventory audits, monitor wine aging, and track cellar rotation to minimize waste and maximize profitability.
• Work with restaurant management to oversee beverage costs and pricing
• Maintain wine and cocktail lists with Bartenders and Beverage Managers
• Attend daily pre-shift meeting
• Deliver on guests’ expectations and have the desire to create WOW moments
• Perform additional duties as assigned that may be outside of the normal scope of duties, based on business needs

Must Haves

• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays
• Ability to collaborate in a team environment
• Basic communication skills
• One year minimum of experience in food and beverage operations, a plus
• Prior micros or other systems experience, a plus
• Certificate of completion from the Guild of Sommeliers, a plus
• Luxury hotel experience, a plus

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and exercise mobility for extended periods of time during your scheduled shift
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and for extended periods during the shift
