Under limited supervision, employee shall assist the Public Works Operations Manager with litter pickup and various solid waste maintenance activities. Duties shall include participation in, coordination with, and supervision of outside agencies and groups to perform the removal of litter from the County’s roadsides and illegal dumping sites. They will also fill in when needed at Convenience Centers and assist with additional solid waste maintenance activities. Reports to the Public Works Operations Manager.
- Interacts directly with various groups including but not limited to volunteer organizations, community service workers, youth groups, and environmental organizations. Communicates with each group in both written and verbal format in an appropriate manner and should be comfortable communicating with large groups.
- Assists in grounds maintenance including landscaping duties (i.e., mowing, snow removal, and operation of various powered equipment).
- Performs various waste resource maintenance activities to include, but not limited to:
- De-rimming and lacing of tires.
- Draining of fluid (i.e., gas/oil) from small engines.
- Refrigerant recovery from appliances.
- Painting and signage maintenance.
- Site inspections and cleaning activities.
- Operates Trash/Recycling Compactors as needed.
- Performs other related duties as required.
High School Diploma or equivalent with experience in environmental education, litter control, and/or solid waste/recycling programs; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Must have knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
Work hours generally are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, employee may be required to work alternate schedules after normal business hours including Saturdays and Sundays, as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including power equipment, power tools, hand tools, shovels, rakes, computers, etc. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Heavy Work. Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using janitorial equipment and hand tools. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, such as hand tools and janitorial equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone.
