Solid Waste Maintenance Worker – Public Works – Solid Waste
This position performs a variety of maintenance duties in support of county solid waste operations.
Major Duties
- Maintains convenience sites and landfill.
- Collects televisions and other electronics from convenience sites; wraps and secures electronics for transport.
- Assists the public in unloading and loading tires.
- Performs general maintenance at convenience sites.
- Prepares appliances and places in metal bins.
- Cleans and maintains scale house area, cuts weeds and collects litter.
- Collects light bulbs at convenience sites.
- Mows grass and cuts weeds; operates a tractor and bush hog.
- Operates backhoe and skid steer to compact and move trash.
- Patches holes in pavement at convenience sites.
- Assists with equipment maintenance and repair as needed.
- Operates scale house as assigned; weighs truck and collects fees.
- Responds to after‑hours emergencies as needed.
- Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking; occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
- Work is performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather; exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals; requires protective equipment such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
