Job summary

The City of Hampton is hiring a Solid Waste Equipment Operator I to safely operate a semi-automated rear-loading refuse truck on designated routes, collecting trash, recycling and yard waste while keeping neighborhoods clean. Daily vehicle inspections and strict safety practices are required to support Hampton’s curbside program.

Minimum: high school diploma or GED; valid driver’s license with satisfactory record; CDL Class B or obtain VA CDL Class B within 30 days; pass background check and

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Six (6) months of full-time equivalent experience operating refuse collection vehicles or similar equipment.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
• Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or have an out-of-state Class B CDL and obtain a State of Virginia CDL Class B within 30 days of employment.
• This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
• Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate a semi-automated, rear-loading solid waste collection truck along designated routes to collect household trash, recycling, yard waste, and other debris.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections.
• Maintain high safety standards in all work activities.
