Job summary

The City of Hampton is hiring a Solid Waste Equipment Operator I to operate a rear-loading garbage truck and handle routine curbside collections on assigned routes. You will perform pre-post trip inspections and follow safety protocols to keep equipment and neighborhoods safe.

Eligible applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and a Class B CDL (or obtain it within 30 days).

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Six months of full-time equivalent experience operating refuse collection vehicles or similar equipment.
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
• CDL Class B license or obtain State Virginia CDL Class B within 30 days of employment.
• This position is safety sensitive and may be subject to alcohol and controlled substances testing.
• Must pass a background check prior to offer or promotion.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate a semi-automated, rear-loading solid waste collection truck along designated routes to collect household trash, recycling, yard waste, and other debris.
• Perform daily vehicle inspections and maintain high safety standards.
• Support Hampton’s curbside collection program to keep neighborhoods clean and sustainable.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Six (6) months of full-time equivalent experience operating refuse collection vehicles or similar equipment.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
• Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or have an out-of-state Class B CDL and obtain a State of Virginia CDL Class B within 30 days of employment.
• This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
• Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

• Requires shift work to include nights, weekends and holidays.
• The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
