Job summary

The City of Roanoke is hiring a Solid Waste Equipment Operator to operate automated side loader, knuckle boom and/or packer truck on assigned routes. The successful candidate will be the primary contact for residents on solid waste, recycling and bulk/brush issues, reading maps, planning efficient routes, and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

The position requires a CDL Class B with air brake endorsement, a high school diploma or GED, and 2–3 years of city driving with multiple stops

Qualifications

• Must have a valid Class B CDL with air brake endorsement.
• GED or high school diploma required.
• 2–3 years of CDL city-driving experience with multiple stops.
• 2–3 years of customer interaction experience.

Responsibilities

• Operate automated side loader, knuckle boom, and/or packer truck per route.
• Read maps and plan the most efficient route.
• Serve as primary contact for residents on solid waste, recycling and bulk issues.
• Explain city policy and code requirements to citizens.
• Maintain logs and checklists; ensure equipment is safe and ready.
• Train sanitation workers and supervise 1–2 staff.
