The City of South Bend seeks a Solid Waste Equipment Operator to collect trash and yard waste using heavy-duty trucks. This role requires physical stamina and the ability to perform routine maintenance while ensuring safe operation of equipment. Candidates must have a high school diploma and valid CDL.
SALARY: $24.12/hourly
WORK SCHEDULE: 6:00am – 4:00pm Monday – Thursday (subject to change)
POSITION SUMMARY:
Operate solid waste equipment to collect residential trash and yard waste. Dispose of trash and yard waste at designated disposal facility. Provide Solid Waste container management duties. Operate and participate in Routeware software and hardware. Responsible for providing quality solid waste services.

EQUIPMENT:
Two-way radio, Routeware software tablet, front end loader, rear loader, automatic side loader, boom truck, pickup truck, trailer, forklift, bobcat, power/tote washer, trash, and yard waste containers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee performs a physical activity that requires regularly sitting in a truck and considerable use of arms and legs and moving of the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Must load, unload, or stack containers, materials, or products, and move or fit heavy objects. Must be able to lift 75 pounds or more.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Employee rides in an enclosed vehicle daily and is exposed to both extreme and adverse weather conditions. Exposure to pollutants, dust, gases, odors, or distracting noises or sounds is common. There is also exposure to cuts, bites, or stings. Entire office area and City vehicles are smoke free.
