Job description

QE Solar is seeking motivated and skilled Solar Technicians to join our team and help deliver clean energy solutions through projects supported by the Illinois Shines program.

As an Illinois Shine Solar Field Technician, you are responsible for providing ongoing field services support to multiple solar, battery storage (BESS), or other renewable energy systems to optimize equipment performance, troubleshoot/resolve issues, support emergency repairs, and ensure ongoing O&M compliance. You will assist with site inspections, maintenance, equipment testing, and project compliance, participating in training and safety orientations to develop technical expertise in PV arrays, inverters, medium voltage, BESS, and other solar services. Operations Leads, Solar Engineers, and management will provide coaching and training to qualify technicians for field operations.

Essential Duties:
  • Diagnose and repair system failures on existing solar sites, identify potential issues, and support real-time solutions to optimize site performance. Perform preventative maintenance on solar, BESS, and related electrical equipment. Support warranty matters and assist with equipment installation, removal, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Ensure a safe work environment by adhering to safety protocols, procedures, and regulations, including lock-out/tag-out, JHA completion, LDL testing, and company safety policies.
  • Prepare service tickets and reports for site visits, repairs, modifications, and investigations, communicating findings promptly and clearly.
  • Conduct site assessments to verify project eligibility and compliance with Illinois Shines (ABP) requirements.
  • Coordinate with technical leads, project managers, and third-party contractors to resolve issues and support performance improvements, safety, and compliance.
  • Maintain accurate documentation to support REC applications and reporting.
Education Required:
  • High School or Technical School Degree, or equivalent experience. Veterans and military candidates are encouraged to apply.
Experience Required:
  • 0-2+ years in solar projects, BESS, or renewable systems; experience with data acquisition systems.
Preferred Experience:
  • Working with 600v-1500v systems; knowledge of NEC, IEEE, NFPA-70e; experience with C&I/Utility Scale solar; operations and maintenance of solar sites.
Certifications and Licenses (Preferred):
  • Inverter/BESS manufacturer certifications, thermography (Level 1), NABCEP PV Installer, OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E, CPR/First Aid, and IT/networking skills.
Physical Requirements:
  • Lift 25-80 pounds, work on uneven terrain, sit or drive for extended periods, climb ladders with weight, and work in extreme weather conditions.
Travel Requirements:
  • Regional and occasional national travel to support client operations.
