Job summary

Mortenson Construction in Minneapolis is seeking a Solar Design Engineer I or II to join our Solar Group. The role focuses on earthwork analysis, tracker foundation design, and grading strategies during preconstruction and design phases for solar projects. Hybrid work in Minnesota with travel up to 10% is included.

The position offers two levels, with compensation based on experience. Ideal candidates hold a civil/geotechnical/mechanical engineering degree and have some solar/renewables

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, geotechnical or mechanical engineering or related field.
• Minimum one year of experience in civil, geotechnical or structural engineering preferred.
• Solar and renewables experience preferred.
• Prior internships experience preferred.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil3D and/or ArcGIS or related design software.
• Experience with LPILE preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Creative thinker with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.

Responsibilities

• Review owner-supplied documents and apply findings to civil and structural designs.
• Validate topographic elevation data and lead efforts to ensure its accuracy.
• Perform site grading and stormwater management design using terrain data.
• Coordinate tracker pile projection height design with respect to racking design criteria.
• Utilize site specific wind and corrosion studies to optimize piles for estimate.
• Contribute to the development of 30% construction documents in-house.
• Participate and/or lead design reviews of civil, geotechnical and structural design submittals.
• Review civil, geotechnical and structural designs to ensure compliance with owner requirements and industry standards.
• Collaborate with Estimating, Design Phase, Operations and Category Management teams.
• Promote designs that are optimized for performance, quality, safety and overall cost efficiency.
• Continually learn new solar industry trends and become a subject matter expert.
• Attend solar industry conferences and other forums.
