Job summary

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) invites applications for a trainee Soil Conservation Technician to work in the local Soil and Water Conservation District offices. You will assist with inventory, layout, survey, design and inspection of soil and water conservation practices under supervision.

Developing plans, advising landowners, and coordinating with SWCD staff and contractors are core duties.

Responsibilities

• Develops soil and water conservation plans and practices that protect, conserve, and enhance natural resources: grasps state and federal conservation programs; advises landowners on practice options; explains programs and options; completes inventories; compiles planning data.
• Completes the technical design and layout of conservation practices according to state and NRCS standards: schedules field visits, conducts surveys and cost estimates; completes layout and checkout using survey equipment and computer programs; oversees construction and inspects practices for compliance; reviews plans with landowners and contractors; reviews construction invoices for cost share reimbursement.
• Informs and educates SWCD commissioners, staff, and the public and attends required meetings and trainings: provides courteous service to landowners, assists with education and outreach; supports district projects; maintains good working relationships; participates in training and state/federal meetings.
