Job summary

Shannon & Wilson is seeking an experienced soil laboratory lead/supervisor to join our St. Louis team.

The role blends senior technical responsibilities with staff oversight, prioritizing geotechnical soils testing, QA/QC, and training for laboratory personnel. The position offers opportunities to guide testing workflows, ensure accuracy, and support equipment maintenance while collaborating with engineers and project teams across infrastructure projects.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in geotechnical soils lab testing and related construction materials work.
• Experience supervising laboratory staff or teams.
• Ability to train and mentor employees and provide feedback.
• Strong knowledge of standard testing procedures and QA/QC practices.
• Proficiency with Word, Excel and applicable lab software.
• Willingness to travel as needed to support projects.

Responsibilities

• Perform and oversee geotechnical soils laboratory testing (gradations, Atterberg limits, compaction, swelling, triaxial and direct shear).
• Coordinate and prioritize lab workload based on project requirements and deadlines.
• Monitor progress and communicate scheduling and technical issues to project teams.
• Review testing docs for accuracy, completeness and procedures compliance.
• Troubleshoot testing procedures, results, and equipment issues.
• Provide technical guidance and training to laboratory staff.
• Support accreditation, QA/QC, and calibration/maintenance of equipment.
• Communicate with engineers, project managers, clients, vendors, and staff.
• Promote a safe, organized, and efficient lab environment.
• Follow Shannon & Wilson policies on QA, safety, and loss prevention.
