Hidden Jobs seeks a Staff Software Engineer to modernize payroll infrastructure, translating money movement, tax calculations, and compliance workflows into reliable tools for operators and partners.

You will own end-to-end projects, mentor teammates, and partner with product, design, and operations to deliver impactful solutions across a distributed US team.

Role overview

A Staff Software Engineer is needed to help modernize infrastructure that underpins how businesses pay their workforce. The role focuses on translating complex backend systems covering money movement, tax calculations, and compliance workflows into clear, dependable tools for operators and partners. Success means owning substantial projects end-to-end and serving as a technical anchor across product, design, and operations.

Responsibilities

• Tackle complex problems across the platform, designing products that turn intricate payroll infrastructure into intuitive tools for operators and partners
• Own projects from problem definition through design, implementation, rollout, and iteration based on real-world usage
• Partner closely with product, design, and operations to understand operator and partner workflows and challenges
• Build internal and partner-facing tools that improve visibility, reliability, and explainability of money movement through the system
• Reduce friction by improving workflows, architecture, and tooling for both developers and operators
• Mentor teammates and raise the quality bar through clear written proposals, code reviews, and open collaboration

Requirements

• Demonstrated staff-level ownership of production systems end-to-end, from design through deployment and operation
• Experience building internal tools, developer platforms, or product systems supporting complex operational workflows
• Ability to navigate ambiguous problem spaces and bring structure through thoughtful design and collaboration
• Comfort debugging complex systems spanning multiple services and infrastructure layers
• Ability to articulate technical tradeoffs to engineers and cross-functional partners
• Working familiarity with or willingness to learn a stack including Python/Django, React, TypeScript, AWS, Terraform, Postgres, Temporal, and GitHub

Nice to have

• Background in fintech, payments, tax, payroll, or other highly regulated operational domains
• Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across teams
