Job summary

Check is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join a unified engineering team. You’ll design and build software that powers money movement, tax calculations, and payroll compliance for thousands of businesses, turning complex infrastructure into clear, reliable systems for partners.

You’ll collaborate with product, design, and operations to own projects from concept to rollout, and you’ll develop internal and partner‑facing tools to improve visibility and reliability across the payroll platform.

Qualifications

• Staff‑level ownership and end‑to‑end delivery of production systems.
• Experience building internal tools or developer platforms.
• Ability to bring structure to ambiguous problems through design.
• Strong debugging across multiple services and infra layers.
• Ability to articulate tradeoffs to engineers and partners.
• Familiarity with Python/Django, React, TypeScript, AWS, Terraform, Postgres, Temporal, GitHub.

Responsibilities

• Run at complex problems across the platform and translate payroll infra into intuitive tools.
• Own projects end‑to‑end from problem identification to rollout and iteration.
• Be a true partner to product, design, and operations on payroll workflows.
• Build internal and partner‑facing tools that improve visibility, reliability, and explainability.
• Reduce friction in workflows, architecture, and tooling for developers and operators.
• Model clear, critical thinking through code, proposals, and diagrams.
• Raise the quality bar by mentoring teammates and shipping work we’re proud of.
