Job summary

OpenAI's Fleet team oversees the computing environment that powers our research and product development. The Software Engineer, Operating Systems & Orchestration will design and implement systems to manage hardware, configurations, and vendor interactions, unifying nodes into clusters to support AI research and external products like ChatGPT.

The role is based in San Francisco, CA, with a hybrid schedule of 3 days in the office.

Qualifications

• Experience with large-scale infrastructure
• Knowledge of cluster-level systems (Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, Terraform)
• Deep expertise in server-level systems (containerization, Linux kernels)

Responsibilities

• Design and build systems to manage cloud and bare-metal fleets at scale.
• Develop tools that integrate hardware metrics with scheduling and cluster management.
• Leverage LLMs to coordinate vendor operations and optimize workflows.
• Automate infrastructure processes to reduce toil and improve reliability.
• Collaborate with hardware, infra, and research teams for seamless integration.
• Continuously improve tools, automation, and documentation.
