Job summary

General Motors (GM) is seeking a Software Engineer for the Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) team in Milford, MI. You will work on electrification propulsion, optimizing hybrid engine speed/torque and energy efficiency across EV/HEV platforms.

You design, implement, and test software for VIP/SDV 2.0 architectures, contributing to GM's ZERO emissions and safer mobility goals. Collaborate in an inclusive Agile environment with CI/CD, systems, calibration, hardware and QA teams.

Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering – Electrical, Mechanical, Computer or CS.
  • 2+ years of embedded controls software experience.
  • Proficient in MATLAB, Simulink, C and C++.
  • Experience with Jira and Agile development.
  • Experience with software testing and Auto Code Generation.
  • Knowledge of Python scripting.

Hybrid: The successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, MI three times per week, at minimum, or as dictated by the business.

The Role: As a Software Engineer at GM, you will be a part of the Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) team, working in the Electrification Propulsion domain both for EV and HEV products, focusing on optimal hybrid engine speed / torque selection, optimization for energy efficiency, charge mode determination, drive unit sensors and actuators management, among other things.

You will design, implement, and test software solutions rolled out to all of GM’s EV and Hybrid portfolio based on Vehicle Intelligent Platform (VIP) and Software Defined Vehicle (SDV 2.0) electrical architectures. Your work will contribute directly to GM\'s vision of a world with ZERO Crashes, ZERO Emissions, and ZERO Congestion.

What You’ll do:

  • Produce or deliver software for embedded controls systems in the electrification propulsion domain
  • Design, development and implementation of Physics and Controls requirements to continuously improve software for mechatronic controls and diagnostic strategies as well as controller communication.
  • Test & demonstrate software functionality & readiness
  • Supply common solutions across all GM owned software
  • Document requirements for design solutions and link them to test cases that can demonstrate software functionality
  • Utilize automated Continuous integration Continuous deployment (CI CD) build environments, test tools, benches, and vehicles to verify functionality of the feature at the unit, integration, Controller, System and Vehicle level

Team Collaboration:

  • Function as an inclusive Agile Scrum team member to deliver software solutions
  • Coordinate and collaborate with systems, calibration, hardware, software quality assurance engineers
  • Have a voice in software planning events, share ideas & learnings and help teach/train others

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • BS in Engineering – Electrical, Mechanical, Computer or BS in Computer Science
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience with proven technical and professional skills in job-related area – embedded controls software
  • Proficient in MATLAB, Simulink, C, C++ programming
  • Experience with Jira and agile software development framework
  • Experience with software testing
  • Experience with Auto Code Generation
  • Knowledge of test scripting using Python
  • Emerging levels of interpersonal and relationship management skills to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization as required
  • Emerging partnership and teamwork skills and ability to learn from and share knowledge with co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, take initiative/self-directed.
  • Customer-centric focus with solution development

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • MS in Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer or Computer Science
  • 5+ years of experience with proven technical and professional skills in job-related area – embedded controls software
  • Knowledge and experience with automotive serial data communication like CAN, Ethernet communications protocol
  • knowledge of Software architecture principles and best practices
  • knowledge of embedded operating systems, controller communication and diagnostics.

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}. This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
