Job summary

General Motors is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to deliver high‑quality software for electrification control systems, including VMEC High Voltage Battery wired/wireless sensing and communications.

You will design, implement, test, and maintain software for mechatronic controls, ensuring safety compliance and traceability across design to test cases, and collaborating with SDV, Systems, and Validation teams in a hybrid work setup.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years in embedded software engineering or 2+ years with Master’s degree in related field.
  • Experience in C/C++, Python, diagnostics strategies, testing methods, and vehicle-level testing.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality embedded software for GM electrification projects.
  • Ensure safety compliance, MISRA guidelines, and traceability from design to test.
  • Collaborate with SDV, Systems, and Validation teams across departments.
  • Utilize CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices in development and testing.
  • Lead and mentor Agile Scrum team members and foster collaboration.

Job Description
DUTIES:

Deliver high-quality software for embedded controls systems in the electrification space specifically for VMEC - High Voltage Battery Wired/Wireless Communication and Sensing (WCSR). Ensure SW deliverables on time and with quality in support of Wired and Wireless Battery Management Systems. Ensure compliance with safety requirements government regulations and GM-internal policies (e.g. MISRA guidelines). Adhere to good software design principles utilizing design patterns and understanding supervisory controls architecture and hardware abstractions for effective software solutions. Design develop and implement Physics and Controls requirements to continuously improve software for mechatronic controls diagnostics strategies and controller communication. Maintain an understanding of Ethernet standards and its application and automotive communication protocols like CAN LIN ARXML. Test and demonstrate software functionality and readiness ensuring hardware agnostic solutions across all GM owned software. Document requirements for design solutions and link them to test cases that can demonstrate software functionality ensuring traceability. Utilize automated test tools in build environments test benches and vehicles to verify functionality at the Controller System and Vehicle level. Lead and provide guidance to your Agile Scrum team members fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment. Coordinate with various departments outside your organization such as Systems and Safety Validation Electrical Architecture Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) Calibration and Vehicle Performance. Embrace software development methodologies to ensure Software Built In Quality promoting early bug detection and facilitating collaboration between developers testers and non-technical stakeholders. Familiarize and work efficiently with Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles leveraging them to create optimized and modular software solutions. Utilize CI/CD pipelines for efficient development testing and deployment of software solutions with a solid understanding of DevOps principles. Develop AI-driven diagnostics and predictive analytics to enhance fault detection prognostics and anomaly detection within embedded control systems. Hybrid Work Policy - 3 days In-office, 2 days remote - Must be able to report to local office.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field of study. Five (5) years of experience as an Embedded Software Engineer, Embedded Controls Engineer or related occupation. OR Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field of study. Two (2) years of experience as an Embedded Software Engineer, Embedded Controls Engineer or related occupation. Two (2) years of experience with the following: Embedded software development; System design diagnostics strategies and control systems for embedded software applications; Testing strategies including SiL HiL and Vehicle-Level testing frameworks; C C++ programming and Python scripting; Diagnostics strategies software verification and validation methodologies; and Software testing environments.
