Job description

About Us

American Century Investments® is a leading global asset manager with over 65 years of experience helping a broad base of clients achieve their financial goals. Our expertise spans global equities and fixed income, multi‑asset strategies, ETFs, and private investments. Privately controlled and independent, we focus solely on investment management. But there’s an unexpected side to us, too. We direct 40% of our dividends every year—over $2billion since 2000—to the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. Our ongoing financial support drives the Institute’s breakthrough work and mission of defeating life‑threatening diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. So, the better we do for our clients, the more we can do for everyone. All 1,400 of us across the globe are inspired every day by the unique difference our hard work can make in so many lives. It shows in the curiosity we bring to every initiative, the deep relationships we build with our clients, and the way we treat each other in the hallway. If you’re excited to learn more about us, we can’t wait to learn more about you.

Role Summary

The Software Engineer Sr. Specialist serves as a hands‑on technical leader supporting Sales and Marketing Technology. This role designs, builds, and evolves scalable, secure, and integrated solutions across SaaS platforms (including Salesforce), custom applications, integrations, and applied AI capabilities. This role is ideal for a senior developer who enjoys building production systems and guiding other engineers, and who is ready to take on increased technical leadership and progressively expand into broader solution design and architectural responsibility over time. You do not need to come into the role as a formal architect, but you should be comfortable leading technical decisions for complex features, integrations, or systems. The Sr. Specialist actively develops production solutions while mentoring engineers, improving platform quality, and influencing technical direction—particularly around practical, responsible use of AI within Sales and Marketing workflows. This role reports to IT Manager – Software Engineering – Application Delivery. This hybrid position will be based out of our Kansas City, Missouri office. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship, now or in the future.

How You Will Make an Impact
  • Design and build end‑to‑end solutions across applications, integrations, AI, security, and operations.
  • Lead technical design for complex features and integrations, collaborating with architecture and platform teams as needed.
  • Actively contribute high‑quality code while guiding other engineers through reviews, pairing, and design discussions.
  • Help establish shared technical patterns, practices, and guardrails that allow the team to move faster safely.
  • Drive practical, responsible application of AI to improve workflows, insights, and developer productivity.
  • Evaluate SaaS platforms, APIs, and tools; contribute to POCs and technical recommendations.
  • Maintain and evolve the health of the existing tech stack by reducing technical debt and improving reliability, observability, and performance.
  • Partner with engineering, security, enterprise architecture, and vendors to deliver scalable and compliant solutions.
  • Examples of impact may include Salesforce integrations, API‑driven services, middleware‑based workflows, data pipelines, event‑based architectures, or AI‑assisted automation embedded into existing platforms.
What We Mean by Technical Leadership
  • Owning challenging problems from design through implementation.
  • Making pragmatic tradeoffs and clearly communicating technical decisions.
  • Improving systems incrementally rather than over‑engineering up front.
  • Mentoring engineers and helping raise the overall technical bar.
  • Knowing when to proceed independently vs. when to seek architectural or security guidance.
What You Bring to the Team (Required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical solutions for complex features, integrations, or systems (as a senior engineer, staff engineer, tech lead, or similar role).
  • Strong hands‑on development experience with modern application stacks (Java/Spring, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js, or similar).
  • Experience designing, consuming, and troubleshooting APIs in service‑based or event‑driven architectures.
  • Hands‑on experience developing on or integrating with Salesforce (Apex, Lightning Web Components, APIs), or strong experience integrating enterprise platforms into Salesforce‑centric ecosystems.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical decisions to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates the American Century Investments Winning Behaviors: Client Focused, Courageous and Accountable, Collaborative, Curious and Adaptable, Competitively Driven.
  • Applied AI & Automation experience applying AI tools or services to real‑world workflows (e.g., automation, insights, content assistance, developer productivity), or strong interest and demonstrated curiosity in learning and responsibly applying AI.
  • Awareness of considerations such as data handling, security, quality, and rollout risk.
  • Willingness to partner with security and architecture teams where AI usage impacts governance or compliance.
Additional Assets (Preferred)
  • Experience working in regulated or risk‑sensitive environments.
  • Salesforce experience across Sales Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Data Cloud, or related platforms.
  • Middleware or integration platform experience (e.g., MuleSoft, Informatica).
  • Cloud‑native development experience (containers, Kubernetes/OpenShift, CI/CD).
  • Observability tooling experience (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana).
  • Prior participation in architecture reviews, platform standards discussions, or technical governance forums.
Why This Role Is Different

This is neither a purely architectural role nor a ticket‑only delivery role. It’s an opportunity for a senior engineer who wants to stay hands‑on, enjoys mentoring and guiding others, is ready to expand technical leadership and architectural influence over time, and wants to work on meaningful Sales and Marketing platforms, including thoughtful AI adoption. If you’re already leading technical decisions informally and looking for a role that supports your growth into broader ownership, this role is designed for you.

What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation package with bonus plan.
  • Generous PTO and competitive benefits.
  • 401(k) with 5% company match plus annual performance‑based discretionary contribution.
  • Tuition reimbursement, formal mentorship program, live and online learning.

Employees are required to be in the office on a scheduled frequency. Adherence to this schedule is essential to fulfilling the expectations of the role.
