Job summary

Systems & Software, a subsidiary of Harris Computer, seeks a Software Engineer to join a small Agile Dev team. You will implement features, fix bugs, and support complex systems, while helping design, build, test, and deploy our products.

Qualifications

• BS in CS or CIS or equivalent work experience.
• 2+ years with front-end and core technologies (Angular, React, Java, Python, SQL, SOA/MVC).
• Experience with Oracle/PLSQL or MS SQL Server/T-SQL.
• Web services experience (REST, SOAP).
• Automated tests with JUnit/Mockito/Jasmine or Cypress/Selenium.
• Comfort with AI coding assistants and review of outputs.
• Ability to design well-structured, OO/SOA software.

Responsibilities

• Implement product designs in multiple languages and technologies.
• Produce accurate estimates and track progress with the development manager.
• Complete software tasks including bug fixes and feature development.
• Write and maintain automated tests (unit/integration/regression).

Job description

Systems & Software, a division of Harris; is seeking a Software Engineer who will be placed into a small Agile Development team. Your primary responsibilities in this role will include new feature implementation, troubleshooting bug fixes, new quotes, and supporting complex technical systems (where you will play an important role in helping design, build, test and deploy our products). You will work with other members on your team to support our current product lines and build out the future of our product. You will have access to the latest tools, hardware, and some of the brightest software engineers in the industry. The successful candidate will initially report to the Vice President of Research & Development, to be subsequently assigned to a Manager / Team Lead of Research & Development. Our engineers use AI coding tools daily, and we've built some of our own internal tooling around them. It helps most with a codebase like ours, which spans several decades of technology. We expect the same standard for AI-assisted code as anything else: you understand it and you can defend it in review. This remote role welcomes candidates anywhere in Canada and the US. Travel is required as needed, approximately 1-2 times per year to Vermont/Customer Site/Some other destination such as AGM. Candidates must hold a current, valid passport and be legally eligible to travel internationally. This includes either passport based visa exemption or possession of any required travel visas for entry into Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean.

What your impact will be:

• Implement product designs by programming in a variety of languages and using a variety of technologies
• Produce accurate effort estimates for large- and small-scale tasks, and work with the Client Development Manager to track development progress and timelines
• Complete software development tasks - bug fixes, customer-driven feature development, product enhancements
• Write and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, and regression) as part of feature delivery, not as an afterthought
• Expand automated test coverage in existing and legacy areas of the product to reduce manual regression effort
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and shift-left quality practices
• Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate implementation, code comprehension, and code review, and share what works with your team
• Collaborate with the R&D team on development methodology, processes, and associated tools
• Work with QA, promote best practices to ensure a high level of quality within the team
• Manage code reviews and closely participate in providing feedback on others' designs/code
• Identify and mitigate issues and risks that could negatively impact project timelines

What we are looking for:

• B.S. in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems or equivalent work experience
• 2+ years experience working with some or all of the following technologies: Front End technologies (Angular, React, one of many JavaScript libraries, JSP) Core Technologies (Java, Python, Procedural SQL, SOA & MVC Architecture, Micro Focus COBOL)
• Proven experience with Oracle and PL/SQL or MS SQL Server and Transact-SQL
• Experience with Web Services (REST, SOAP)
• Hands-on experience writing automated tests with frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, Jasmine/Karma, Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium
• Comfort working with AI coding assistants (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) and sound judgment about verifying and reviewing their output
• Ability to design and develop well-structured, custom application software following such principles as object-oriented design and service-oriented architecture
• Possess an excellent work ethic, high level of initiative, aptitude, and energy in order to succeed in a fast-paced environment
• Has excellent interpersonal skills and effectively communicates well with both internal and external resources
• Has mindset and desire to embrace learning, working well within a team or unsupervised

• Experience with billing and/or accounting applications
