Job summary

Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance in West Des Moines, IA is offering a 2027 Summer Internship for currently-enrolled undergraduates. This paid internship runs May 17 through August 6, up to 40 hours per week, with potential to turn into a full-time role in the future.

Applicants should be sophomores, juniors or seniors majoring in CS or MIS (or Math with technical coursework); Java experience and SQL basics are required, OO concepts are a plus.

Qualifications

• Currently-enrolled undergraduate student (sophomore to senior) in CS, MIS, or math with technical coursework.
• Must be available May 2027 graduation; May 2027 graduates will not be eligible.
• Exposure to Java and SQL is required; OO concepts are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates, clarifies, and understands requirements, documents, and functional specifications.
• Codes software in Java per specifications.
• Validates software and ensures compliance with requirements.
• Creates, updates, and maintains development documentation.
• Interacts with IT department staff.
• Follows IT department processes and duties.
• Accomplishes other tasks as assigned.

Farmers Mutual Hail (located in West Des Moines, IA) is currently looking for a qualified undergraduate to join our 2027 Summer Internship Program. This is a paid internship starting Monday, May 17 through Friday, August 6, working up to 40 hours per week for the summer, with the potential to turn into a full-time, permanent position in the future.

We are looking for currently-enrolled college students who are close to the West Des Moines area, as this is not a remote internship.

Requirements

Education: Must be a currently-enrolled sophomore, junior or senior at an undergraduate college or university, majoring in Computer Science or MIS; or a Math major who has taken technical college-level courses. (May 2027 graduates will not be eligible).

Skills: Exposure to Java (a must), SQL queries, Object‑Oriented Programming concepts is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Validates software; complies with specifications and requirements.
• Creates, updates, and maintains appropriate development documentation.
• Interacts/communicates with other IT department staff.
