The ideal candidate will design, develop, test, and automate software across the SDLC, collaborating with government customers and engineers to deliver secure, reliable solutions. Must have active clearance.

Job Description

VAE, Inc. is seeking an experienced Software Developer to support a C5ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) program. This role will design, develop, and automate software solutions in support of mission-critical systems, with an emphasis on Python-based development and Ansible-driven infrastructure automation. The ideal candidate is a hands‑on engineer who thrives in a fast‑paced environment and is ready to contribute immediately.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications and automation tooling primarily in Python
• Build and maintain Ansible playbooks and roles to automate configuration management, deployment, and infrastructure provisioning
• Collaborate with systems engineers, program stakeholders, and government customers to translate mission requirements into working software
• Troubleshoot and resolve software defects, performance issues, and integration challenges across development and production environments
• Participate in code reviews, contribute to technical documentation, and follow established software development lifecycle (SDLC) practices
• Support integration efforts across C5ISR systems, ensuring solutions align with program technical and security requirements
• Identify opportunities to improve automation, reliability, and efficiency across supported systems and workflows

Qualifications

• Active Secret clearance required
• An active DOD 8570 certification required
• Strong, hands‑on professional experience developing software in Python
• Strong, hands‑on experience developing and managing automation with Ansible
• Demonstrated experience across the full software development lifecycle, from design through deployment and support
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a remote, distributed team environment
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work directly with technical and government stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code provisioning software
• Experience working within cyber security or cyber operations environments
• Experience with Elastic (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana / the Elastic Stack)
• Familiarity with C5ISR, DoD, or other federal mission systems
• Based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area a plus but this position would operate 100% remote
