In this role, your day focuses on developing, supporting, and improving the technology that supports financial, actuarial, and tax functions, working closely with business partners, technical business analysts, and other IT team members.
A large part of your day involves researching, designing, developing, testing, and implementing solutions that support accounting, actuarial, and tax business processes. This could mean enhancing an existing application, automating a manual process, troubleshooting a production issue, improving data integration, or developing a solution to meet a new business or regulatory requirement. You consider the entire process and system impact when determining the best technical solution.
Problem solving is an important part of the role. You analyze application and processing issues, review data and system behavior, identify root causes, and work with other IT teams, vendors, and business partners when necessary to develop effective solutions. You balance resolving immediate operational needs with identifying opportunities to improve system reliability and prevent recurring issues.
You also work directly with business partners to understand how applications are being used and provide technical guidance on existing and proposed solutions. This may include explaining the impact of a system issue, discussing options for an enhancement, helping determine the feasibility of a request, or supporting the implementation of a new technology or application.
Development work is balanced with production support and multiple competing priorities. On any given day, you may be developing and testing an enhancement while also responding to a production issue or supporting a critical financial, actuarial, or tax processing deadline. Managing priorities, communicating status, and knowing when to elevate an issue are important parts of the role.
Collaboration and knowledge sharing are also key. You participate in project and technical discussions, provide guidance to other developers, share application and technical knowledge, and help business partners and IT associates better understand the systems you support. As an experienced developer, others may look to you for assistance with programming, testing, troubleshooting, and application-specific questions.
Strong technical skills, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and communication are essential. Ultimately, the Software Developer III helps ensure that critical business applications remain reliable while continuing to evolve through enhancements, automation, modernization, and new technology solutions.
