Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin's Applied Research Laboratories on the Pickle Research Campus is seeking a Software Design Engineering Scientist Associate to design, develop, test, document, and maintain production and R&D software for data collection, signal processing, mapping, and navigation.

Software Design Engineering Scientist Associate

Hiring Department: Applied Research Laboratories

Location: PICKLE RESEARCH CAMPUS

Weekly Scheduled Hours: 40

Earliest Start Date: Immediately

Position Duration: Expected to Continue

Purpose: Design, develop, test, document, and maintain production and R&D software used in data collection, signal processing, mapping, and navigation for the Advanced Technology Laboratory (ATL) at Applied Research Laboratories (ARL).

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop software applications.
  • Maintain and test new and legacy code.
  • Create supporting documentation for software and systems.
  • Participate in data collection exercises, data management, and analysis.
  • Potential travel to domestic offsite test events, 2-4 times per year.
  • Other related functions as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or other related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to define and document complex software applications using object‑oriented data structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow coding standards and testing standards.
  • US Citizen; subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at level appropriate to project requirements of the position.
  • Dynamic skill set, organization, planning, time management, attention to detail, problem solving, engineering judgment, communication skills, ability to work independently and as team member, multitasking, and ability to work under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Desire to research and develop products using new and innovative software technologies.
  • Experience with unit testing, version control, and documenting development of software.
  • Experience or knowledge in C#, Python, JavaScript, C/C++, Java, web application development, Git, cloud computing (AWS or Azure).
  • Graphic design and/or UX design experience.
  • Previous work experience in professional or research-oriented software development.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 with at least a 3.2 in relevant coursework.

Salary Range

$88,500-$120,000+/negotiable depending on qualifications.
