Job summary

The Salvation Army in Meriden, CT is seeking a part-time Social Services Assistant to support Corps Officers, maintain office operations, and provide intake, referrals, and material assistance to clients.

This role requires strong communication, organizational skills, and a value-based approach. A degree in social services and driving a valid license are preferred. Hours are 24 weekly, Monday–Thursday, 9:00 am–3:00 pm, with a paid 15-minute break daily.

Qualifications

  • Associate's or bachelor’s degree in social service or related field.
  • Bilingual and bicultural preferred.
  • Demonstrate ability to engage with diverse populations.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in social services.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Corps Officers with programs (youth camps, Angel Tree, holiday meals, food pantries).
  • Maintain office organization (typing, filing, computer use, mail prep).
  • Assist in the soup kitchen on weekends as requested.
  • Coordinate monthly social services statistics and submit them.
  • Discuss special cases with Corps Officers to resolve client situations.
  • Maintain confidential files and records of services and action plans.
  • Provide information and referrals to TSA programs and community resources.
  • Provide intake/assessment, referrals, advocacy, and material assistance.
  • Refer clients seeking spiritual guidance to Corps Officers.
  • Refer clients to Pathway of Hope Case Manager as appropriate.

Overview

Location: Meriden Corps (Meriden, CT)

Status: Non-exempt, Part-time Plus

Hours Per Week: 24

Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 9:00 am-3:00 pm (includes one 15-minute paid break per day)

Scope of Position: Provide various services to individuals in need and assist them with identifying and addressing the root causes of their situation. Assist with the daily maintenance of the social services office organization. Work to fulfill The Salvation Army's mission by serving others with the love of God, respect, and care.

Responsibilities
  • Assist Corps Officers with various programs, including youth camps, Angel Tree, holiday meals, and food pantries as requested.
  • Assist in the daily maintenance of the office organization, including typing, filing, computer use, mail preparation, etc.
  • Assist in the soup kitchen on weekends as requested by supervisors.
  • Coordinate monthly statistics for social services and submit them accordingly.
  • Discuss special cases with the Corps Officers to resolve client situations.
  • Establish and maintain a database of community resources to refer clients to other locations that may help address their needs.
  • Maintain confidential files and accurate records, including pertinent information such as services provided and a plan of action.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exhibit loyalty to The Salvation Army and the staff in all job-related matters.
  • Participate in community meetings and collaborative networks to address issues relevant to the community and represent TSA at social service community functions deemed appropriate by the Corps Officers.
  • Provide clients with information and referrals to appropriate TSA programs and other community resources.
  • Provide direct service to clients, including intake/assessment, referrals, advocacy, and material assistance based on guidelines, available resources, and TSA policies and procedures.
  • Refer clients seeking spiritual guidance to the Corps Officers.
  • Refer clients to the Pathway of Hope Case Manager, as appropriate.
Qualifications
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize responsibilities and function independently.
  • Associate's or bachelor’s degree in social service or related field.
  • Bilingual and bicultural preferred.
  • Demonstrate excellent ability to engage with diverse populations.
  • Excellent time management skills are required.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in social services or related fields.
  • Must have a high energy level, solid work ethic, and the ability to respond to changing conditions.
  • Must work well in a team atmosphere.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
