Description

Overview
The Communications and Marketing Department is responsible for advancing The New York Public Library’s mission and priorities through the promotion of its services, resources, locations, collections, programs, events, and exhibitions to a broad array of audiences and communities. Leveraging both print and digital platforms, the Department positions NYPL as a cultural and educational leader and seeks to attract and engage new audiences across New York City and around the world.

The New York Public Library (NYPL) has a global audience of more than 3.5 million followers across every major social media platform. The Social Media Manager plays a critical role in creating the voice and identity of NYPL on social media channels, amplifying our offerings and services through the development of creative social media content, collaborating with partners, and leading the strategy for engaging audiences through various social media channels.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:
  • All flagship social media platforms for NYPL
  • Growth and engagement strategy across all platforms
Teach:
  • Social media best practices to all branch and division staff who oversee NYPL affiliated accounts
  • Colleagues how to spot and create engaging content for flagship social media channels
Learn:
  • Latest trends and developments in social media
  • NYPL’s many offerings, from neighborhood branches to research divisions, and understand the social media needs of different departments in the organization
Improve:
  • Communications between social media stakeholders across NYPL
  • Social media publishing workflows
Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:
  • Have a clear vision for what makes compelling content for NYPL channels
  • Learn the social media needs of NYPL and familiarize themselves with the different branches, divisions, and research centers
3 months, this person will:
  • Develop robust workflows for planning, creating, scheduling, and communicating upcoming social media content
  • Have a strong understanding of NYPL's unique voice and social media priorities
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Oversee all flagship social media accounts, and provide training and guidance for colleagues managing NYPL-affiliated social media accounts
  • Continue to increase engagement across flagship NYPL social media accounts
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Multimedia, the Social Media Manager will:
  • Write and curate inspiring content that increases engagement with NYPL’s collections, campaigns, reading recommendations, programs, and services
  • Be responsible for growth strategy across all platforms
  • Manage all flagship social media platforms for NYPL, including scheduling posts, managing the social media editorial calendar, and prioritizing content in evolving situations
  • Ensure that NYPL’s social media platforms are complying with best practices for cyber safety
  • Monitor hundreds of self-managed local library branch and specialty accounts, provide leadership to staff managing these accounts with daily social media content recommendations and training
  • Solve problems creatively, proactively, and thoughtfully
  • Manage relationships with social media influencers and partner organizations, and coordinate cross-promotions and events with other cultural organizations
  • Monitor social media channels during rapid response/crisis situations
  • Develop social media plans for key initiatives
  • Performs other assigned duties as necessary

Required Education, Experience & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree
Required Experience
  • 5+ years of social media work experience
Required Skills
  • Excellent writing and copyediting skills
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Experience with social media publishing and monitoring tools (e.g., SocialFlow, SproutSocial, Meta Business)
  • Knowledge of best practices for cybersecurity and social posting, as well as current social media trends and tools
  • Ability to adapt voice to various NYPL channels
  • Basic image editing/resizing
  • Track record of working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with the publishing, library, literary, or cultural fields
