Job Summary

The Snowmobile & UTV Guide is responsible for leading guided tours through Borealis Basecamp’s trail systems, along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, in the White Mountain National Recreation Area, and throughout surrounding wilderness across both fall and winter seasons. This role ensures guest safety while delivering engaging and memorable outdoor experiences using both snowmobiles (often called snowmachines in Alaska) and UTVs depending on seasonal conditions. Success in this role requires strong off‑road vehicle experience, situational awareness, and the ability to confidently interact with guests while managing dynamic terrain and weather conditions.

All Adventures Team staff work a rotating schedule providing coverage at the Adventure Desk approximately one day per week.

Adventure Desk Duties

Greet guests as they enter the adventure center, check them in and ensure all applicable waivers are signed, outfit guests into proper fitting gear, sanitize gear as it is returned, sell merchandise and tours from the adventure desk, clean desk, and maintain a tidy building for guests, communicate accurate availability for all tours to guests.

All team members at Borealis Basecamp are expected to maintain a team‑first mindset, assist across departments when needed, and communicate professionally with guests.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead guided tours safely using snowmobiles and UTVs based on season and conditions
  • Instruct guests on proper operation and safety procedures for both snowmobiles and UTVs
  • Conduct pre‑tour safety briefings and enforce all safety policies
  • Monitor terrain, weather, and guest ability to modify tours as needed
  • Respond to incidents and administer wilderness first aid when necessary
  • Recover stuck or disabled snowmobiles or UTVs in the field
  • Assist with trail maintenance and grooming as needed
  • Prepare and organize guide equipment, fuel, and safety gear
  • Track and manage inventory of fuel and consumable supplies
  • Provide engaging narration about local wildlife, landscape, and Alaska history
  • Answer guest questions and ensure a positive experience
  • Assist with adventures operations as needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Demonstrate experience operating snowmachines (snowmobiles) and/or UTVs required
  • Ability to safely operate both vehicle types across varying seasonal conditions
  • Ability to obtain Wilderness First Responder certification (Company sponsored training available in early August)
  • Strong situational awareness and decision‑making ability
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency situations
  • Strong communication and guest service skills
  • Willingness to work outdoors in Arctic conditions for extended periods
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of Alaskan wildlife, history, and environment
  • Previous guiding or outdoor leadership experience
  • Mechanical knowledge of snowmobiles and UTVs
  • Strong storytelling and guest engagement skills
  • Experience working in remote or seasonal environments
Physical Demands
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in extreme Arctic conditions
  • Ability to stand and remain active for up to 8 hours per day
  • Ability to navigate uneven terrain in low‑light conditions
  • Ability to lift, carry, and position up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to operate snowmobiles and UTVs in varied terrain and conditions
Compensation & Benefits
End‑of‑Season Bonus

A $1.50 per hour bonus is paid for every hour worked throughout the season to employees who complete the full season. Employees who leave prior to April 13 are not eligible for this bonus.

Employee Housing

On‑site housing is available for $10.50 per day (double or triple occupancy). Amenities include shared common areas with TV, Wi‑Fi, dining space, and an exercise area. Housing also includes private bathrooms, laundry facilities, staff‑prepared lunch and dinner, and a self‑serve continental breakfast (oatmeal, cereal, fruit, etc.).
