Actalent is seeking an experienced SMT Engineer to lead planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of SMT and circuit board assembly manufacturing in a high-reliability environment. Qualifications

  • Lead SMT and circuit board assembly processes planning and improvements.
  • Collaborate with design, operations and quality to ensure manufacturability and cost targets.
  • Support line launches, equipment commissioning and ramp-up to achieve target run rates.
  • Develop standardized processes, work instructions, and operating procedures.
  • Hire, train, and mentor SMT production teams for strong technical capability.
  • Perform DFM reviews of PCB assemblies and BOMs to optimize quality and cost.
  • Develop SMT tooling, fixtures, and validation methods to improve yield.
  • Drive continuous improvement across quality, yield, efficiency and defect reduction.

The SMT Engineer partners closely with Design, Operations, and Quality teams to ensure products are manufacturable, cost-effective, and compliant with rigorous quality standards. This position is responsible for establishing and scaling SMT manufacturing operations, supporting new product introductions, and driving technical leadership across equipment, processes, and production teams.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of SMT and circuit board assembly manufacturing processes.
  • Partner with Design, Operations, and Quality teams to ensure products are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet quality and reliability expectations.
  • Support SMT line launches, equipment commissioning, and production ramp-up activities to achieve targeted run rates and productivity.
  • Establish and scale SMT manufacturing operations, including line setup, process development, staffing, and operational readiness.
  • Develop and maintain standardized processes, work instructions, training programs, and operating procedures for SMT production.
  • Hire, train, mentor, and manage SMT production teams to build strong technical capability and consistent performance.
  • Conduct Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews of PCB assemblies, bills of materials, and manufacturing processes to optimize quality and cost.
  • Develop and optimize SMT processes, including tooling, stencils, fixtures, and validation methods, to improve yield and reduce defects.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, yield, efficiency, and defect reduction across SMT operations.
  • Lead new product introductions and manage the transition of products from development into stable, repeatable production.
  • Oversee SMT equipment programming, setup, validation, maintenance, and calibration programs to ensure reliable operation.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing and equipment issues using structured root cause analysis and implement effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support production scalability through capacity planning, line balancing, and operational planning to meet demand.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, traceability, regulatory, and audit requirements within SMT manufacturing.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation for processes, equipment, and validations.
  • Coordinate with equipment vendors for equipment selection, implementation, optimization, and ongoing technical support.
  • Present technical updates, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders in a clear and data-driven manner.
Essential Skills
  • At least 6 years of experience in the design, execution, and sustaining of manufacturing processes and technologies, with technical leadership in high-reliability SMT environments.
  • Proven success in technical leadership designing and implementing manufacturing processes that meet cost, productivity, run rate, and quality expectations.
  • Thorough knowledge of validation principles, manufacturing processes, quality systems, and engineering design fundamentals.
  • Strong electrical and automation programming aptitude applicable to SMT equipment and related systems.
  • Experience planning, coordinating, and performing manufacturing engineering activities in a production setting.
  • Hands-on experience with SMT engineering management and SMT production environments.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management principles and their application in manufacturing.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Education in Mechatronics, Electrical, or Electronic Engineering, or completion of a MEMS program at a technical or community college.
  • Direct experience working within an ISO 9001-compliant environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for root cause analysis and continuous improvement.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present technical findings to stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop technical and production staff.
Work Environment

This is an onsite role in a state-of-the-art, growing manufacturing facility with best-in-class SMT capabilities. You will work directly on SMT lines and related equipment in a hands-on engineering environment, collaborating closely with design, operations, quality, and production teams. The setting emphasizes high reliability, robust quality systems, and continuous improvement, supported by modern SMT equipment, automation, and standardized processes.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Hudson, OH.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $130000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
