Job description

Job Summary

Are you a versatile mechanic who loves variety? We are looking for an Automotive/Small Engine Fleet Mechanic to keep our operations running smoothly. In this role, you will be the backbone of our field operations, responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining everything from our commercial truck and trailer fleet to our specialized landscaping and construction equipment. If you can handle both a brake job on a pickup truck and a carb rebuild on a commercial mower, we want you on our team.

Key Responsibilities

Automotive & Fleet Maintenance

  • Perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on company fleet vehicles (light/medium-duty trucks, vans, and utility trailers).

  • Diagnose and repair automotive systems, including brakes, suspensions, steering, basic electrical, and exhaust systems.

  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections (oil changes, fluid flushes, tire rotations, and brake checks) to minimize downtime.

Small Engine & Landscape Equipment Repair

  • Accurately troubleshoot and repair breakdowns quickly to maintain company operating efficiency.

  • Demonstrate technical expertise in repairing 2-cycle, 4-cycle, and liquid-cooled small engines.

  • Service and maintain specialized landscaping and construction equipment, including but not limited to:

    • Commercial Mowers (Zero-turns, stand-ons)

    • Handheld equipment (Blowers, Weed Eaters, Chainsaws)

    • Heavy machinery (Tractors, Skid Steers, and attachments)

  • Perform routine equipment service, including oil changes, air filter replacements, blade sharpening, and belt replacements.

Shop Operations & Logistics

  • Maintain accurate service and maintenance records for all fleet vehicles and equipment.

  • Organize shop inventory, track parts usage, and ensure all parts flow correctly through the company inventory system.

  • Pick up parts from local vendors and perform occasional off-site or field repairs when equipment breaks down on a job site.

  • Keep the shop, yard, and building clean, organized, and safe.

  • Ensure all equipment and shop practices comply with OSHA and other relevant safety regulations.

Team Collaboration & Seasonal Support

  • Communicate proactively with internal managers to ensure crews have the proper, functioning equipment needed for their daily tasks.

  • Assist the company with seasonal service transitions, including preparing, maintaining, and repairing snow removal equipment (plows, salters) during the winter months.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience: Proven experience as a mechanic working on both automotive vehicles and small engines (landscaping/construction equipment experience is highly preferred).

  • Technical Skills: Strong diagnostic skills in mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical systems.

  • Certifications: ASE certifications or manufacturer-specific small engine certifications (e.g., Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Honda) are a major plus.

  • License: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (required for parts pickup and off-site service calls).

  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50-75 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in various weather conditions.

  • Tools: Must possess a personal set of standard hand tools (specialty tools provided by the company).
