Job summary

Great American Insurance Group is seeking a Small Business Renewal Underwriter & Portfolio Associate to join its Specialty Human Services team. This fully remote role supports the Northeast territory from Maine to Virginia, with a preference for candidates in the Northeast or Illinois/Wisconsin.

You will underwrite new and renewal small business accounts, analyze risk, collaborate with agents and clients, and maintain underwriting files while ensuring compliance with state and federal

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Business, Insurance, or related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
• 2–5 years of commercial lines underwriting or related insurance operations experience.
• Proficiency with underwriting systems, policy platforms, and MS Office.
• Strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills.
• Occasional travel limited.

Responsibilities

Our Specialty Human Services Division is seeking a Small Business Renewal Underwriter & Portfolio Associate to join its team. This role supports the Northeast territory spanning Maine to Virgina. This position is fully remote, with a preference for candidates located in the Northeast or Illinois/Wisconsin.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

• Evaluates and underwrites a book of small business accounts new and renewal business in accordance with Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite. Reviews existing policies for potential renewal or modification.
• Analyzes risk data to make informed decisions on coverage, pricing, and terms within authority. Including analyzing financial statements, property valuations, and loss histories to assess risk exposure. Orders and reviews additional reports or screens loss control inspections.
• Collaborate with other underwriters, agents, brokers, and clients to obtain necessary information and clarify details.
• Prepares and maintains underwriting files for assigned underwriting partner, ensuring all documents and approvals are properly filed. Compiles reports on risk evaluations, policy statuses, and portfolio performance for underwriters and management.
• Ensures proper documentation of underwriting decisions and compliance with state and federal insurance regulations.
• Communicates underwriting decisions clearly and effectively to internal teams, agents, and brokers.
• Stays updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
• Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers, focusing on generating new business and retaining profitable business.
• Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirement's

• Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Insurance, Finance, or a related field preferred. Equivalent insurance industry experience considered. CPCU, AU, AINS, ARM, or progress toward completion of professional insurance designations.

• Generally, 2-5 years of commercial lines underwriting, underwriting support, or insurance operations experience. Experience with small business or middle market commercial insurance preferred.
• Proficiency with underwriting systems, policy administration platforms, and Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Position limited occasional travel.
