North Carolina State University’s CVM Teaching Hospital in Raleigh, NC, is hiring a Small Animal Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join our fast-paced clinical team. The role focuses on triage, acute care, nursing support, and collaboration with students, residents, and veterinarians to deliver high-quality emergency care.

This on-site position requires lifting up to 50 pounds, on-call duties, and holidays/weekends; you will contribute to patient care, documentation, and safety while mentoring

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment.
• Experience as a veterinary assistant in a clinical setting preferred.
• Experience with electronic veterinary medical records systems preferred.

Responsibilities

• Emergency triage, assessment, stabilization, and monitoring of critical patients.
• Nursing care including venipuncture, catheter placement, transfusions, anesthesia/sedation, and fluid therapy.
• Coordinate care with clients, referrals, students, and hospital services; document in HIS and handle billing/referrals.
• Train staff and students; maintain a safe clinical environment; follow safety policies.
• Lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodations.

Essential Job Duties

• Emergency & Triage Care: Perform primary triage, patient assessment, stabilization, emergency treatments, CPR /life-saving interventions, and ongoing monitoring of critical and emergent patients.
• Advanced Patient Care: Provide skilled nursing care including venipuncture and catheter placement, transfusions, oxygen therapy, ECG , urinary and feeding tube management, wound care, anesthesia/sedation, pain management, fluid therapy, and care of complex medical, neurologic, trauma, respiratory, toxicologic, and extracorporeal patients.
• Diagnostics & Procedures: Perform and assist with diagnostic testing and emergency procedures, including in-house laboratory testing, blood gases, radiographs, ultrasound, drug screening, minor surgery, and pre-surgical stabilization. Safely calculate and administer high-risk medications, CRIs, fluids, and treatment therapies.
• Communication & Coordination: Coordinate patient care and workflow with clients, referring veterinarians, students, interns, residents, clinicians, and specialty services. Document and communicate patient information, diagnostics, treatments, and plans through hospital information systems while providing billing and referral support.
• Teaching, Safety & Hospital Operations: Orient, train, and coach staff and veterinary students while maintaining a clean, safe, and functional clinical environment. Follow hospital, infection control, OSHA , EHS , radiation safety, and other applicable policies and effectively utilize specialized emergency and patient-care equipment.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as a veterinary assistant in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively train, mentor, or support veterinary students, new team members, or clinical staff in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
• Experience using electronic veterinary medical record systems to document patient care, coordinate treatment plans, and communicate with multidisciplinary clinical teams.
