Job summary

Howard County Government is seeking a dedicated Utility Worker II/Meter Reader to perform skilled labor in water and sewer system maintenance. Typical duties include reading meters, installing meters, and supporting crews with field operations in a busy county environment.

The role requires the ability to work on essential personnel tasks, operate heavy equipment when needed, and coordinate with the public while upholding safety standards.

Qualifications

• Two years of general laboring or public works maintenance experience.
• Class A or A-Restricted Commercial Driver's License, or ability to obtain within six months.
• OSHA/MOSHA training certifications as required by job assignment.

Responsibilities

• Read residential and commercial water meters using electronic devices or manually.
• Assist with reading and repairs of large commercial meters.
• Utilize handheld computer to locate property and record meter readings.
• Perform high/low usage investigations and resolve pressure and flow inquiries.
• Turn water service on/off for delinquent accounts.
• Install new residential and commercial meters.
• Mark water/sewer house connections and mains per Maryland Miss Utility requirements.
• Operate M-scope or radio locating devices.
• Inspect sanitary sewer manholes and pipelines for condition and flow.
• Inspect and maintain utility rights-of-way.
• Update sewer records and assist repair crews.
• Carry and use hand tools for manhole access.
• Read blueprints and contract maps.
